Carmen Electra Reflects on "Baywatch": A Boundary-Pushing Spectacle that Wasn't Pornography

In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, the timeless beauty Carmen Electra reminisced about her days gracing the screens of the original "Baywatch." The 54-year-old, who recently competed on "Nation's Dumbest," shared her insights on what made the iconic series a global phenomenon. "It's hard to replace Pamela [Anderson] and Yasmine [Bleeth], and all those people," Electra said. "There was just a certain tone to it that it was such a fantasy, and maybe it was the first time on television you could see so much skin because we really were playing lifeguards, right?" Electra admitted that the show may have left some viewers thinking, "Oh my God, what is this? We can see nipples." However, she clarified, "It wasn't porn. You know, what I mean? They didn't have to sneak away and find a VHS tape to, like, sneak and put in. You can watch this." The actress emphasized that the show's sexy nature was a significant factor in its success. "Sometimes we were trying to be sexy, sometimes not trying to be sexy...all of a sudden, you get these guys on there with these gorgeous bodies," she added. However, Electra believes that the show's educational aspect also played a crucial role in its popularity. "Because we heard from a lot of people, a lot of fans out there, that they learned so much watching the show." Among the lessons, Electra proudly shared that she had even learned how to administer CPR. Electra joined the show in 1997 for its eighth season after gaining exposure from her 1996 Playboy pictorial. In terms of returning for the new reboot of the series, Electra expressed her willingness to don the iconic red one-piece once again, especially since her former love interest on the show, David Chokachi, has signed on to return. "I could do something. Come in, have another love scene with David Chokachi. Just something really cute and fun. I would be down to get into the water again," she said. "I think it would be fun. It makes sense. I was David Chokachi’s love interest way back then. I think it would be really fun and why not, you know?" Chokachi's character, Cody Madison, now owns a beachside bar, The Shoreline, and acts as a mentor to the younger lifeguards. Electra mused that a surprise visit could be in order. "I think it would be so cool if I just came in for an episode to surprise him and say hi. They fall in love again, who knows?" However, there is one aspect of her "Baywatch" days that Electra is not eager to revisit: the rigorous training she underwent when joining the cast. After her time on "Baywatch," Electra had a successful career in both film and television, appearing in films such as "Scary Movie," "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," "Meet the Spartans" and others. She also recently appeared as a contestant on "Nation's Dumbest," a new celebrity competition show. Initially hesitant to participate, Electra eventually agreed after Fox reassured her that it was more like an acting role. "Once I was not there anymore, I kind of missed it...and there was a lot of fun. I did miss the cast a lot," she shared. However, Electra admitted that the show was challenging for her. "It could be very stressful and I would freeze." A particularly humbling moment came when she couldn't remember what BBL stood for during a pop quiz. "Nation’s Dumbest" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on Fox, with new episodes available the following day on Hulu.
