Grand Theft Auto 6 Sets Sights on Hollywood with Netflix Partnership

The highly anticipated video game, Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), has sent shockwaves through the gaming world - but it's not just gamers who are buzzing. Rockstar Games' exclusive partnership with streaming giant Netflix is a clear signal that GTA 6 is poised to become a major player in Hollywood as well as the gaming industry. On August 27, Netflix will debut an "extended look" at GTA 6, marking a significant shift in the landscape of entertainment. While previous trailers for the game were released on YouTube and social media platforms, Netflix has been granted exclusive access to fresh footage ahead of its widespread online release six hours later. Take-Two Interactive's CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that this partnership was not solely motivated by Netflix's large audience - the streaming service boasts over 325 million subscribers as of 2025 - but also to establish GTA 6 as a significant cultural tentpole beyond gaming. With record-breaking views for its first two trailers (reaching 288 million and 176 million views on YouTube since their respective releases in December 2023 and May 2025), the Netflix partnership may have been unnecessary to attract the same massive crowd for the third. However, Rockstar Games saw an opportunity to signal GTA 6's potential as a mainstream entertainment juggernaut. Netflix has long had its eye on the gaming industry, seeking to capitalize on popular titles such as The Last of Us, Super Mario, Fallout, Minecraft, and more. But unlike these adaptations, the anticipation for GTA 6 is centered solely around the game itself, not a potential TV show or movie. This collaboration marks Netflix's entry into the world of gaming on a new level. Instead of streaming the premiere of a TV show or movie trailer, they are offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at a video game that they did not develop and have no involvement in publishing. Financial details of the partnership have been kept under wraps, but sources suggest Netflix pursued the opportunity to be part of "big cultural moments" like GTA 6, which analysts predict could generate over $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion in global sales during its first week - surpassing even the impressive opening weekend box office of Spider-Man: Brand New Day by at least three times. Brandon Riegg, Netflix's VP of nonfiction series, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating that GTA 6 reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. He believes that the game's unprecedented level of anticipation and fandom makes Netflix an ideal platform to debut the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto story for its members first. The exact nature of this "extended first look" remains a closely guarded secret until the special launches on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, followed by its release on Rockstar Games' YouTube and social channels at 9 p.m. ET. This partnership marks the start of a larger marketing campaign for GTA 6 ahead of its November 19 launch. Zelnick views this unique partnership as just one step in Take-Two's ongoing relationship with Netflix, which has previously held licenses for the GTA mobile games and currently collaborates on WWE 2K. With Netflix continuing to expand its presence in gaming, Zelnick is open to exploring additional opportunities beyond mobile titles. "I do hope we’ll continue to do business with Netflix," Zelnick told Variety. "They’ve been great partners, and I think there are a lot of opportunities across both our console and PC and mobile portfolios." However, Zelnick stresses that Take-Two's ambitions extend beyond partnerships with Netflix. "While this particular partnership is groundbreaking and unique, Rockstar has licensed content to Netflix before, as has the rest of Take-Two," he said. "We have a close partnership with Netflix, and they are in the video game business. We’re very happy to be their partner. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of things that we can do with Netflix and any other outlets in the future." With GTA 6's impending release, it seems that Hollywood has a new contender in the world of entertainment - one that is more than capable of stealing the spotlight.
