Heartbreaking Confession: Roland Orzabal Reveals Love Triangle That Shattered His Marriage and Changed His Life Forever

In a revealing memoir titled "Welcome to Your Life," the iconic singer of Tears for Fears, Roland Orzabal, opens up about the tumultuous final years of his marriage, confessing that he fell in love with another woman before his wife's tragic death. The man behind timeless hits like "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Mad World," who has now reached the age of 64, shares a raw account of his personal life, detailing the pain of watching his wife's health deteriorate over the years. Orzabal candidly admits that after years of struggle, he finally found a way to move on. "I didn't want to write something false," Orzabal told Fox News Digital. "I always felt that somewhere out there is someone who’s going through what you went through." Orzabal's world was turned upside down in October 2016 when he met writer and photographer Emily Rath during a Tears for Fears performance at Red Rocks, Colorado. Little did he know that this chance encounter would lead him to the woman who would eventually become his second wife. "I'd spent years and years with Caroline in this state," Orzabal reflected. "It wasn’t just a year or six months. And yes, I had enough." As Orzabal looked out into the crowd that night, he felt an immediate connection to Rath. "That’s my wife," he recalled thinking. But their relationship was complicated by the fact that Orzabal was already married and Caroline was in no condition to let go. Rath was 30 when she met the then-55-year-old Orzabal. "Ouch," he wrote. "If only I was half my age and she was older." The pair initially developed a friendship, but as time went on, Orzabal found himself falling deeper in love with Rath. Looking back, he admitted that he had feelings for her before Caroline's death. Orzabal had known Caroline since they were teenagers and the couple married in Bath, England, in 1982. They raised two sons together, but their marriage was far from perfect. Over the years, they endured frequent arguments and periods of separation, as Orzabal's career took him away for extended periods. By the mid-1990s, their marriage was in crisis, with both parties seeking counseling to try and salvage their relationship. Orzabal admitted that he had been selfish and absorbed in his rock star persona during this time, causing further strain on their union. Things took a turn for the worse in the late 2000s when the couple settled into a routine of heavy nightly drinking. Around 2011, friends began to notice changes in Caroline's behavior, but Orzabal was slow to recognize the signs of her alcohol-related illness. "It was a slow process," Orzabal recalled to Fox News Digital. "She would say it’s menopause. 'It’s the menopause. I’m not eating because of the menopause. I’m weird because of the menopause.' And she was always very emphatic, hard to argue with." Orzabal eventually realized that Caroline's condition was far worse than just menopause and sought help from several doctors. But by then, it was too late. In 2017, Orzabal lost his first wife of 35 years, who was just 54 at the time of her death. The aftermath of Caroline's passing left Orzabal grappling with guilt and a sense of responsibility for her illness and eventual demise. He sought treatment for his Ambien addiction in 2019 and began to come to terms with his past. "There’s this madness that comes with grief," he explained. "There’s the negotiation. 'What if I did this?’ ‘What if I did that?’ And then, what happens when you no longer have that person to negotiate with? You no longer have that person to get angry. That’s all gone, and you are only left with the feeling." Orzabal eventually found happiness again with Rath, whom he married in 2020. The couple welcomed a daughter, Eula, in 2025. Orzabal credits Rath for being an amazing support system throughout his journey and believes that if Caroline were still alive, she would understand and approve of their relationship. "If you believe in the soul, then [Caroline] would completely understand," Orzabal said. "When I think about the person she was … she would understand."
