Kate Beckinsale Hits Back at Body-Shamers, Vows to Prioritize Mental Health After Mother's Death

British actress Kate Beckinsale has spoken out against the online body-shaming she's faced in the wake of her mother Judy Loe's tragic passing. In a poignant message shared on Instagram, the 53-year-old Underworld star addressed the cruel comments she's received about her weight and health, urging empathy from critics and prioritizing her mental wellbeing. "After losing my beloved mother to cancer just over a year ago, I took a break from social media," Beckinsale wrote in a heartfelt post on August 8th. "Upon returning, I found myself once again confronted by comments questioning my physical appearance and health." She went on to share some of the hurtful messages she's received, such as "Loosen up the Ozampic! You were divine and now you look anorexic!" and "Gain weight, you bitch," which sparked her to respond with a message of compassion and understanding. "You must eat please," one comment read, to which Beckinsale replied, "Having just made a several slides post about how eating could actually kill me this is a little beyond." Beckinsale has previously disclosed her struggles with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), an autoimmune disorder that causes allergy-like symptoms. In a now-deleted video, she spoke openly about the grief and health issues she's faced, including the harsh criticism she receives whenever she shares photos of herself online. "First off, I’ve lost my entire family, except for my precious daughter, in a short amount of time," she shared in the video, referring to her mother's death following 18 months after her stepfather's passing in 2024. "Secondly, I have an autoimmune condition called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome." She implored critics to consider the challenges people might be facing behind the scenes before passing judgment. "You don’t know what’s going on in people’s lives," she said. "Treat people just how you'd like to be treated yourself, give people a little grace. If you don’t have anything nice to say, maybe don’t say anything." In her latest post, Beckinsale vowed to focus on prioritizing her mental health moving forward, reminding fans and critics alike that online comments can have a profound impact on individuals' wellbeing. "I refuse to let the broken voices of trolls distract me from healing," she wrote. "I am human, I am allowed to grieve, and I choose to prioritize my own peace."
