In a heartbreaking announcement via Facebook on August 9th, the wife of renowned actor Ben Jones shared the devastating news of his sudden passing. The beloved star of The Dukes of Hazzard, best known for his portrayal of the eccentric mechanic Cooter, was 84 years old and had been resting at home when he succumbed to a massive heart attack. Jones shared an extraordinary life with his wife Alma Viator, who he married nearly 34 years ago. After his time on the iconic action-comedy series came to an end in 1985, Jones ventured into politics, winning Georgia's Fourth Congressional District in 1988 and being re-elected two years later. A versatile personality, Jones served as president of SAG’s Georgia branch, chairman of the Georgia Film Commission, and wrote for shows such as CBS Summer Playhouse and Primary Colors starring John Travolta and Emma Thompson. In a 2023 interview with Georgia Public Broadcasting, he humorously reflected on his numerous achievements, joking, "Sounds like a guy who can’t hold [down] a job to me." The actor's time as Cooter, the energetic and beloved character, remains fondly remembered. Reflecting on those days, Jones shared, "When we started filming that show, I was a child actor at the time... It was a wild, crazy show and I was cast for it because I was what they were looking for physically and ... I just made it up. I had fun with it, it was hard not to have fun doing what we were doing.
