Spider-Man Holds On as Middle Eastern Adventure and Animated Epic Surge in China Box Office

Sony's blockbuster "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has continued its dominance at the Chinese box office, raking in an impressive RMB196.6 million ($28.9 million) during the August 7-9 weekend, securing its position as the top earner for a second consecutive week. With a cumulative total of $185.4 million since its July 29 premiere, the web-slinging sensation shows no signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, Pearl Studio's animated fantasy "All Wishes Come True!" has maintained its stronghold on the silver screen in its fourth weekend, earning $20.4 million and pushing its total cumulative box office to an impressive $210.6 million since its July 18 release. In third place, Dirty Monkeys and Damai Entertainment's "Once Upon a Time in the Middle East" made a strong debut with $15 million from preview screenings. Directed by Wen Muye ("Dying to Survive"), the film tells the story of Shen Teng as Xu Fu, a chef who travels to the Middle East to work at a Chinese restaurant to clear family debts. The film, co-written with Lang Qunli and Wei Zhong, also stars Jiang Qiming as floor manager Ma Junsheng, and is set to make its official nationwide theatrical debut on August 11. Enlight Pictures' animated fantasy "To Your Island" opened in fourth position, generating $7.9 million over its three-day premiere weekend. Directed by Zhou Haoran and adapted from Fan Dawang's popular web novel, the romance-tinged coming-of-age story follows a young woman guided by an origami crane to a strange island, where she attempts to unlock suppressed memories and help her ex-boyfriend, who has been mysteriously transformed into a rabbit. Universal's epic adaptation of "The Odyssey" entered the top five ahead of its wide launch, collecting $6.9 million from previews to reach $7.6 million overall. The Chinese box office saw a weekend gross of $97.3 million, bringing the year-to-date revenue to $3.57 billion, down 31.8% from the same period in the previous year. The competition is fierce as these films battle it out for audiences' attention and box office dominance.
