AFC Richmond's New Boss: Alice Chilton, the Iron-Willed Coach, Joins the 'Ted Lasso' Fray in Season 4

As "Ted Lasso" prepares to kick off its much-anticipated fourth season on Apple TV+, a fresh face with a steely gaze and a formidable coaching style is set to shake up AFC Richmond's inner circle. Tanya Reynolds steps into the role of Alice Chilton, the no-nonsense head coach of the club's women's soccer team – a stark contrast to the optimistic, folksy charisma of Ted Lasso himself. "She's complex," Reynolds reveals to Variety during the July 27 premiere, "a veritable onion with layers that peel back as the season progresses." Co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis extended a unique offer to Reynolds, describing Alice's character traits without providing any script previews. "Jason painted a vivid portrait of who she was and what her story arc entailed," Reynolds shares, "and that was my starting point in understanding the intricacies of her icy exterior." The actress joins an illustrious ensemble as Season 4 marks the long-awaited return of the Emmy-winning comedy, three years since the Season 3 finale. Despite her enthusiasm for the role, Reynolds confesses that stepping into a beloved series like "Ted Lasso" comes with its fair share of pressure. "It's nerve-wracking to step into something so cherished and not want to disappoint," she admits. "But I'm doing my best to rise to the occasion." Created by Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Bill Lawrence, and Joe Kelly, "Ted Lasso" has solidified its place as one of Apple TV+'s most successful originals, garnering multiple Emmy Awards and amassing over 25 billion minutes of viewership. Sharing the screen with Sudeikis and Hunt was, in Reynolds' words, "like being gifted a free comedy show." However, portraying Alice's unwavering stoicism presented its own challenges. "Alice rarely shows emotion, so it required a great deal of discipline to maintain her poker face," Reynolds explains. "But the banter between Jason and Brendan was relentless – they kept me in stitches throughout filming." Reynolds is joined by returning cast members Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, and Jeremy Swift, as well as newcomers Abbie Hern, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, and Rex Hayes. "The camaraderie on set has been exceptional," Reynolds enthuses. "Everyone is so down-to-earth, and there's a genuine sense of collaboration." "It truly reflects the power of women in sports," Riley Tiernan, one of AFC Richmond's players, adds. "We may be tough, but we're also resilient – just like Alice."
