Ascension: Alfonso Cuarón's Chilling Horror Thriller Comes to Life with Caitríona Balfe at the Helm, Exclusively on Apple TV

After years in development, visionary filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón's highly anticipated horror thriller series, Ascension, has officially been greenlit by Apple TV. The series will star Outlander's Caitríona Balfe in the lead role. Cuarón, who co-wrote Ascension alongside his brother Carlos and Natalie Erika James (Apartment 7A, Relic), Christian White (Apartment 7A, Relic), will also serve as executive producer under his Esperanto Filmoj banner, which holds an overall TV deal with Apple. The series follows Rose, a tenacious documentary filmmaker and divorced mother, portrayed by Balfe, who excels at uncovering others' truths but struggles to find her own. When Rose takes on a project documenting the enigmatic 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she initially finds solace in its teachings - until she unearths something far more sinister lurking beneath. Balfe will not only star but also executive produce alongside Alfonso, with Esperanto Filmoj's Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz, Steve Golin, David Levine, and Zack Hayden from Anonymous Content also serving as executive producers. James and White, who co-write and co-showrun Ascension, will serve as lead director and secondary directors, respectively. Ascension marks Cuarón's second series for Apple TV; he previously created the critically acclaimed limited series Disclaimer, starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Lesley Manville. The show premiered in late 2024. A multiple Oscar nominee, Cuarón is best known for his groundbreaking films such as Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Gravity, and Roma. Balfe will be making her second appearance on Apple TV with Ascension, following her role in the upcoming original film Tenzing. Known for her breakout performance in Outlander, Balfe has earned four Golden Globe nominations for her work on the Starz drama, which concluded after eight seasons earlier this year. Her impressive film credits include Belfast (for which she received another Golden Globe nod), Ford v. Ferrari, Now You See Me, and Super 8. Ascension is set to mark Balfe's return to Apple TV, with the actress joining an impressive lineup of talent for this chilling new series. Stay tuned for more updates on the anticipated Ascension.
