Jamie Lee Curtis Spills on Her "Awful" Experience on 'New Girl'

Jamie Lee Curtis, the Academy Award-winning actress, recently revealed her surprising disdain for shooting the beloved sitcom 'New Girl.' In an interview at NBCUniversal's Summer Backlot Experience in Los Angeles, she candidly admitted, "I did a single-camera [comedy], which I hated." Despite its acclaimed status as a hilarious and popular series, Curtis, now 67, felt the filming process was less than enjoyable. "It's just like doing a movie," she explained, adding that the lack of audience laughter during recording made for an eerie atmosphere. "For me, awful." Curtis played Zooey Deschanel's on-screen mother, Joan, in five episodes of the Fox series. Rob Reiner, who passed away in 2021, portrayed Jess's (Deschanel) father. In a 2012 interview with Collider, Deschanel enthusiastically discussed the casting of these two A-listers as her parents: "They’re people that I think would be just so perfect... I can’t wait to start shooting with them." Contrasting her negative experience on 'New Girl,' Curtis fondly recalled her 1980s ABC sitcom 'Anything But Love,' in which she starred alongside Richard Lewis. "It was my favorite job I've ever had," she revealed during the NBCUniversal panel. "I love the whole part of it, every aspect of it." Curtis' longing for a return to sitcoms has finally been fulfilled with her new role as co-creator, executive producer, and guest star in NBC's 'Newlyweds.' With unabashed pride, she declared, "I like to refer to myself as the HBIC. Head bitch in charge." Embracing her position as a boss at 68 years old, Curtis expressed her enthusiasm for being in control, stating, "I’ve been doing it not as a boss for a long, long time. And now I’m a boss, and I love it."
