Rosie O'Donnell Finds Solace and Community in Ireland, Despite Loneliness Away from Home

In a candid conversation on the "Good Hang" podcast, Rosie O'Donnell opened up about her unique experience of living far away from her native land in Ireland. Sharing her insights, the 64-year-old comedian expressed, "The best part is that they don't have celebrity culture there. Nobody really cares that you're famous." She went on to recount a heartwarming encounter at an Irish beer garden where she spent two and a half hours engaging with a couple and their baby. The couple later revealed they were fans, prompting O'Donnell to reflect, "I thought it was a sentence you’d never hear in America. It's not the most important thing about you." O'Donnell, who is raising her 13-year-old adopted son Clay in Ireland, admitted that there are challenges to being so far from her home country. She misses her grown children and close friends dearly, stating, "My friends are really my family and community, and it's been very difficult." However, she has found solace in forming new friendships with families whose children have autism, including Clay's age group. Reflecting on her life in Ireland, O'Donnell shared, "It's been very beautiful and very, very healing for me. People say they notice a difference, and I think I’m just calmer. I’m calmer being over there." Despite making frequent trips to the U.S., O'Donnell has continued her professional pursuits, attending events such as the Tony Awards in June and performing her one-woman show, Rosie O'Donnell: Common Knowledge, in New York City in July. In a world where fame can often overshadow personal connections, O'Donnell's experience in Ireland offers a refreshing reminder of the importance of genuine human interaction and community.
