Royal Mishap! Radio Caroline Accidentally Announces King Charles' Death - Find Out What Happened Behind the Scenes

In an unprecedented blunder, a UK radio station mistakenly announced the death of King Charles III during their broadcast earlier this year. The incident occurred on Radio Caroline's popular talk show, The Barry Marsh Show, as three prerecorded statements were played, one of which claimed that 'news media' confirmed the monarch's demise. The national anthem followed the third announcement, and the misleading message was repeated, causing a 16-minute silence on air. The country's media regulator, Ofcom (Office of Communications), reported that the station then resumed regular programming after the period of silence. Approximately 30 minutes later, the host apologized on air and confirmed the unfortunate error. "I've just been informed that we've played in error some information a little earlier. I didn't hear this myself, but it is incorrect, it’s a technical issue, and of course we apologize," he stated. Ofcom deemed the incident as a breach of two rules from the Broadcasting Code: "News, in whatever form, must be reported with due accuracy and presented with due impartiality" and "Significant mistakes in news should normally be acknowledged and corrected on air quickly. Corrections should be appropriately scheduled." The incident was traced back to a staff member performing maintenance on the studio computer who, out of curiosity, accessed three prerecorded files that were saved for the event of King Charles' death. The station later reported that there is a "set of strict instructions" for "presenters and managers" regarding the airing of these files, but the employee violated protocol. The host was on a call when the announcement aired and did not immediately notice the error. He eventually contacted the station engineer who had already become aware of the issue and was investigating what went wrong. The correct program was then played. Radio Caroline admitted that they took the matter seriously, stating that much activity was taking place during those 30 minutes leading up to the apology. They claimed to have acted "as soon as possible." The staff member responsible for playing the files has since been reprimanded and apologized. To prevent such incidents in the future, the station's prerecorded files now exist on an external drive for access only when necessary. Hosts and staff members were also reminded of the relevant procedures. Radio Caroline alleged that only two complaints about the announcement were received, claiming that the mistake likely "caused minimal offense or distress." The station also noted that they are "usually very careful" but are "a 100 percent volunteer-led organization" and do not have the same resources as larger broadcasting companies. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of accuracy and impartiality in news reporting, even during moments of high anticipation or tragedy.
