RTL's Skyward Growth: Streaming Boost Outshines Traditional TV Slump and Fremantle Recovery in Sight

European media titan RTL Group has unveiled impressive first-half figures, with streaming revenue soaring 3.9% to an impressive €2.9 billion ($3.3 billion), counterbalancing a slight dip in its linear TV and Fremantle content divisions. This stellar growth is partially attributed to the acquisition of pay-TV operation Sky Deutschland from Comcast in June, expanding RTL's revenue base. With this deal, Sky Deutschland will merge with RTL+, creating a formidable streaming platform boasting 12.4 million paid subscriptions across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The company's streaming operations extend to M6+ in France as well. Adjusted EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) jumped almost 50% during the January-June period, reaching €239 million ($275 million). In a statement, RTL Group CEO Clément Schwebig expressed optimism, stating, "Our streaming businesses deliver strong profitability. Streaming revenue and paid subscriptions continue to grow dynamically." Schwebig further asserted that streaming is expected to contribute around €100 million ($115 million) to the company's full-year operating profit, positioning RTL as the third-largest player in the German-speaking streaming market. The CEO described the Sky Deutschland acquisition as "transformational" for the media conglomerate. The streaming growth has been instrumental in offsetting a decline in traditional TV advertising revenue, which saw a 4% drop. RTL's production operations at Fremantle also experienced a year-on-year decrease of 7.7%, reaching $964 million (€835 million). However, Schwebig forecasts a surge in Fremantle revenues by the end of the year with the launch of new shows, including the highly anticipated "Baywatch" reboot airing on Fox in the U.S. in January 2027 and the thrilling "Kill Jackie," featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones, which has been acquired by HBO Max across key European markets ahead of its fall 2026 premiere following earlier distribution deals with Prime Video and AMC+. Looking ahead, Schwebig underscored Fremantle's commitment to investing in intellectual property (IP) development, acquiring small and medium-sized production companies with a strong IP base, and implementing artificial intelligence across its value chain. The future is undoubtedly streaming-focused for RTL Group, as it continues to redefine the entertainment landscape.
