Suno Sets Download Limits to Combat AI Music Abuse: Exclusive Details on New Tiers and Watermarking Features

In an exclusive move to legitimize its presence in the music industry, Suno has announced download limits for users of its AI music generator. Starting September 3, these limitations will be implemented across all user tiers. For free Suno users, seven total downloads per month will be allowed. Meanwhile, Pro subscribers, who can commercially license their tracks, will have access to 20 downloads monthly. The Premier tier, offering the advanced Studio production suite, boasts a generous 60 downloads each month. Users desiring additional downloads can purchase them, with no restrictions for Suno Studio users. It remains unclear how these limits will affect the forthcoming vinyl program, expected to launch in the coming months. Suno's blog post on Monday explained that the new download limits aim to "discourage bad actors from mass-exporting music." Major streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have been vocal about their efforts to combat the influx of AI-generated music within their libraries, including unauthorized uploads to human artists' pages and attempts to manipulate system rules. Suno emphasized that these limits are intended "to ensure our platform is used for purposeful music creation, while still allowing everyone to create, remix, listen, and share on Suno." The download restrictions stem from Suno's settlement with Warner Music Group last year over copyright infringement claims. Previously, Udio disabled downloads altogether as part of its copyright infringement settlement with Universal Music Group. Both companies are developing label-supported models, with Suno promising "faster generation speeds, higher audio fidelity, and greater control over music" through these new partnerships. Initially teased by CEO Mikey Shulman last week, the upcoming watermarking of downloaded songs is intended to distinguish AI-generated music on the platform. Though still embroiled in copyright infringement lawsuits by UMG and Sony Music, Suno continues to innovate and address industry concerns head-on.
