A Scare for Baking Show Star Prue Leith as She Battles Severe Migraine and Loses Speech

In an unexpected turn of events, the beloved judge from The Great British Baking Show, Dame Prue Leith, found herself in a medical scare recently. The 86-year-old culinary icon opened up about her harrowing experience in her monthly column for The Oldie magazine, revealing that she was hospitalized due to a severe migraine attack that left her temporarily losing her sight and speech. In her column, set to be released this Friday, Leith shared that while vacationing in Yorkshire, she endured an intense migraine that resulted in the loss of "half" her vision. As the symptoms escalated, a kaleidoscope of bright, flickering colors began appearing in her upper right field of vision. Concerned, Leith's husband, John Playfair, observed her slurred speech and rushed to call their doctor, who administered a series of tests to determine if she was suffering from a stroke. Despite Leith's initial claims that it was merely a migraine, the doctor ordered an ambulance to transport her to the hospital for further evaluation. Upon arriving at the hospital, Leith underwent a six-hour wait before seeing a doctor who requested a CT scan due to her symptoms. Following the scan and an hour-long wait for the results, Leith was released from the hospital at 2 am. Thankfully, the scans revealed that she had indeed suffered a severe migraine attack, rather than a stroke. Reflecting on the incident, Leith expressed gratitude towards the medical professionals who treated her with caution, even though she knew all along it was merely a migraine. "I knew all along that all I had was a migraine," she wrote. "But since the speech problem is a classic symptom of a stroke, and my extreme old age being a time when mini-strokes are common, everyone was determined to be safe, not sorry." Leith's health scare is not her first public discussion about her health issues. In April 2025, she candidly spoke about aging on the talk show Loose Women, expressing her frustration with growing older and admitting that she struggles to move without daily exercise. In a previous statement announcing her departure from The Great British Baking Show in January, Leith expressed her love for the series but felt it was time for her to step away. "Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years," she said. "I have genuinely loved it, and I'm sure I'll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison, and Noel, as well as the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4." Nigella Lawson is set to replace Leith as a judge for the upcoming season of The Great British Baking Show, scheduled to premiere in September in the US.
