Beloved Belgian Influencer Michiel Vandeweert Bids Farewell at 28 Years Old

In a heartbreaking turn of events, popular Belgian influencer and documentary star Michiel Vandeweert has passed away at the tender age of 28. The news was shared by VRT NEWS, who confirmed the tragic loss through a statement issued by production company Boundbreakers. Vandeweert was best known for his appearance in the acclaimed documentary series How to Be Alive, which chronicled his daily life and battle with a rare progressive genetic disorder called Progeria. This disorder causes children to age at an alarming rate, with an average life expectancy of around 15 years, as reported by the Mayo Clinic. Throughout his life, Vandeweert displayed incredible resilience and positivity, captivating followers with his infectious spirit. The soccer enthusiast was a devoted fan of KRC Genk, who paid tribute to him following his death, expressing their condolences via Instagram on August 10th. "With profound sorrow, KRC Genk bids farewell to Michiel Vandeweert," the heartfelt message read. "A true bon vivant and loyal Genkie, Michiel's courage and optimism were an inspiration to many. Our thoughts are with Amber, his parents, family, and friends. Rest in peace, Michiel. 💙." To honor Vandeweert's memory, his funeral will take place within the stadium of KRC Genk, marking a first for the organization. The ceremony will be held on the field itself, with seating provided for those who wish to attend and pay their respects. According to Erik Gerits, Head of Community at KRC Genk, they are prepared for both a small gathering and a larger audience, as it is difficult to estimate attendance numbers at this time. Mayor Rik Kriekels of Diepenbeek, where Vandeweert lived, also paid tribute to the content creator, expressing admiration for his ability to live life to the fullest despite the challenges he faced. Through social media and his memoir Ik Ben Michiel (I Am Michiel), published at age 15, Vandeweert shared his journey with Progeria, capturing the hearts of over 90,000 followers online. Alongside his sister Amber, who also lives with Progeria, he was featured in How to Be Alive earlier this year, offering a glimpse into their extraordinary lives. In these difficult times, we extend our deepest condolences to Michiel's family, friends, and fans around the world. His legacy will live on as an inspiration to us all.
