From Dodger Legend to Hollywood Walk of Fame Star: Orel Hershiser's Journey from the Mound to the Microphone

Originally drafted as a 17th-round pick for just $10,000 and a new glove, Orel Hershiser's baseball journey was anything but ordinary. "The love of baseball has made me dedicated to everything that has come into my life because of baseball," Hershiser says, crediting his lifelong passion and humility for his success in the broadcasting world.

Just like on the field, he immersed himself in every aspect of the game, from second base to hitting, coaching, managing, and now broadcasting. Bob Costas, a respected sports commentator for NBC, praises Hershiser as a rare breed of player who invests time and intellectual energy into mastering a new skill. Since 2014, Hershiser has served as color commentator and analyst for the Dodgers through Spectrum SportsNet L.A., often joining the booth for games on ESPN, NBC, or Fox.

As a Dodger Legend, Hershiser brings unparalleled insight and authority to his commentary, according to Costas. Born in Buffalo, New York, and moving frequently during his youth due to his father's career in sales, Hershiser found his footing as a player at Bowling Green State University before being signed by the Dodgers in 1979. Overwhelmed by the urban sprawl of Los Angeles and the weight of the Dodger organization, Hershiser admits that he was initially like a Norman Rockwell character – a small-town boy making it big in the city of angels on his own terms.

Throughout his 13 seasons as a player with the Dodgers, Hershiser established a reputation as a consummate teammate, loyal friend, and a person of great integrity who is devoted to his Christian faith. Hershiser's broadcasting career took off when he joined ESPN as an analyst in 2000 at the request of his wife, Dana Hershiser. After a brief stint with the Texas Rangers in various roles from 2002 to 2005, he returned to the world of broadcasting and has since become a beloved part of Dodger games on Spectrum SportsNet L.A.
