Negotiations have reportedly stalled over demands for higher upfront fees and substantial increases in back-end participation for the core team of four (excluding Baumbach, who would only receive a fee hike). Gosling is said to be asking for a whopping $20 million to reprise his critically acclaimed role as Ken in the sequel. If Warner Bros. fails to reach an agreement with the foursome, the "Barbie" movie rights may find a new home with toy company Mattel, who could license the brand to another studio.

The director and Baumbach have devised a sequel concept, but they are allegedly unwilling to share it or begin writing until contracts are signed.
