On July 9th, the highly-anticipated adaptation of Little House on the Prairie graces our screens on Netflix, a dream come true for the series' creator and mastermind, Rebecca Sonnenshine. A lifelong devotee of Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic novels, this latest reboot marks the culmination of Sonnenshine's passion project – a passion that has led her to create some of today's most captivating television, from The Boys and Archive 81 to The Vampire Diaries. "When I heard they were planning a Little House reboot, I knew this was my chance," Sonnenshine shared with Variety. "I threw everything I had at them – my genre experience, my love for the books, and my unwavering dedication to staying true to Ingalls' original vision." Netflix took notice of her pitch and saw in her a unique perspective that would breathe new life into their adaptation, which will take a more expansive approach than the beloved NBC series that captivated audiences for nine seasons. "Little House on the Prairie is deeply rooted in my childhood," Sonnenshine confided. "These were the first books I ever read, and they shaped me as both a writer and an individual. In many ways, it was this love for the series that led to Archive 81 – a testament to how ingrained these stories are in my heart." Sonnenshine's Little House promises to explore the lives of the Ingalls family, including young Laura (Alice Halsey), her father Charles (Luke Bracey), mother Caroline (Crosby Fitzgerald), and older sister Mary (Skywalker Hughes), as they move from Wisconsin to Kansas in search of a new life. However, it is the series' portrayal of Indigenous peoples that sets it apart – specifically the mixed-race Osage family, the Mitchells: William (Meegwun Fairbrother) and White Sun (Alyssa Wapanatâhk), their daughter Good Eagle (Wren Zhawenim Gotts). "As an adult, everything changes in the Little House books, particularly Little House on the Prairie – it's all about the Osage," Sonnenshine revealed. "The Osage are ever-present in that book, but we never truly understand them. I knew we had to change that, and I worked tirelessly to create a family that mirrored the Ingalls'. To do so, I conducted extensive research and collaborated with story consultant Robert Warrior." While Netflix has already greenlit a second season of the show, which is currently in production, Sonnenshine faced backlash when news of the reboot broke in January 2025. Megyn Kelly led the charge, posting on Twitter: "Netflix, if you 'woke-ify' Little House on the Prairie, I will make it my singular mission to absolutely ruin your project." Melissa Gilbert, who starred as Laura Ingalls in the original series for nine seasons and 204 episodes from 1974 to 1982, came to Sonnenshine's defense on Threads: "Ummm…watch the original again. TV doesn't get much more 'woke' than we did. We tackled racism, addiction, nativism, antisemitism, misogyny, rape, spousal abuse – and every other 'woke' topic you can think of." As the Little House reboot premieres on Netflix, questions about potential changes to the series arise, as it delves more deeply into the lives of the Indigenous peoples whose territory is invaded by settlers in late 19th-century Independence, Kansas. "I'm not entirely sure what 'woke' means anymore," Sonnenshine mused. "But to me, it signifies awareness and sensitivity towards social injustice and prejudice – particularly racial prejudice. When people express fears of a 'woke' Little House reboot, I find myself wondering, really? Is this about the Ingalls family exploring new frontiers, or is it about acknowledging and respecting those who have lived there for generations?" Sonnenshine remains steadfast in her commitment to staying true to Wilder's vision: "I've been saying from day one that people have nothing to fear. We're tackling some complex issues, but I believe audiences will find them intriguing – conservative viewers included. They may be apprehensive now, but I honestly think they'll be pleasantly surprised." The Little House on the Prairie reboot represents more than just a return to our screens; it offers a fresh perspective that invites us to reconnect with our past while acknowledging the complexities of the present. As Sonnenshine so eloquently put it: "This is about more than just crafting and baking – it's about understanding the world around us, appreciating its beauty, and doing our best to make it a better place."
