Pop Princess Phenom: Unraveling Tate McRae's Rise to Fame, Her New York City Love Affair, and the Secret Ingredient Behind Taylor Swift's Sourdough

In the heart of Manhattan, a pop sensation emerges from the shadows of anonymity. Canadian-born Tate McRae, the breakout star hailed as Gen-Z's answer to the legendary Britney Spears, finds solace in the city that never sleeps. After relocating from Los Angeles and kicking off her career as music's newest pop powerhouse, she revels in the cloak of normalcy only New York can offer. A few weeks following the Knicks' exhilarating victory parade, McRae sits nestled amidst the vibrant Flatiron District, looking out at a bustling sea of blue-and-orange jerseys and hats below. Her latest tour may have amassed over a million Tater Tots (her devoted fanbase) and grossed more than $100 million, but in her new home, she's simply another local frequenting her neighborhood coffee shop and attending hot Pilates classes. "You've gotta learn yourself," McRae says, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "You have to write down, 'What are my favorite songs? What are my favorite colors? What are my favorite references? What are my favorite movies?'" she continues, her voice brimming with passion. "That, I think, shapes your identity and hopefully comes across through you as the vessel." Since wrapping up her "Miss Possessive" tour last year, McRae has been working tirelessly to balance her skyrocketing fame with maintaining a sense of self. The experience was unlike anything she'd ever encountered, catapulting her into the limelight and testing her mental fortitude. When asked about the finale at Los Angeles' Kia Forum in November, she laughs and admits, "I have early signs of dementia, I think, because I can’t remember anything that's ever happened to me." Yet amidst the whirlwind of success, McRae has found solace in her music. Her songs serve as a vessel for her innermost thoughts and emotions, revealing a depth and vulnerability that resonates with fans worldwide. Tracks like "Nostalgia" and "Horseshoe" expose her emotional journey, exploring the complexities of her rise to stardom and the pressures that come with it. McRae is no stranger to embracing the spotlight, however. Her electrifying performances have become legendary, earning her a reputation as a triple threat: a songwriter, singer, and dancer who brings her music to life in a captivating and dynamic way. With "Think Later" and "So Close to What," she found her footing, blending pop's Y2K-era charm with her choreographic prowess. But fame hasn't come without its challenges. McRae grapples with the weight of expectation and the constant scrutiny that comes with being in the public eye. "I remember reading Sylvia Plath being like, 'I am her,'" she says, a hint of sadness creeping into her voice. "My thoughts felt so dark at the time, and I felt so lonely. I really needed to come back into my body and regulate my nervous system. I was so shot after the tour." To cope, McRae turns to the stage. Performing, she says, is where she feels most at home. She embodies a character named Tatiana onstage, allowing her to tap into the raw energy that powers her shows. It's when she's dancing and singing that she feels most confident and in control. In July, McRae was invited to attend the wedding of the century at Madison Square Garden, followed by a FIFA World Cup match where she delivered the match ball. Her celebrity circle continues to grow, with appearances at Charli xcx's Met Gala after-party, and encounters with Blackpink’s Rosé, Taylor Swift, and the Haim sisters. Swift, in particular, holds a special place in McRae's heart. The Grammy nominee fondly recalls receiving a homemade loaf of sourdough bread from the superstar, and her lingering affection for the scent that filled her home. "The basket smelled amazing," she says, leaning forward as though sharing a secret. "I don’t know what perfume she wears, but I was like, 'She must smell incredible.'" With her fourth album in the works and two major festival performances on the horizon, McRae is poised to continue her meteoric rise. As she navigates the choppy waters of superstardom, she remains grounded by her family, her music, and her unwavering determination to grow, evolve, and deliver a performance that surpasses her last. "There's always thought about how you want your legacy to go down," she says, her eyes reflecting the ambition that drives her every move. "For me, the way to do that is try to beat your last performance, try to beat your last song, try to grow, evolve, pick it apart, rip it apart, figure out what didn't work, what I didn't like about that performance, what I could have done better, why I was nervous. I think the more you can master yourself and your performances, the better you get." In a world where fame can be fleeting and unpredictable, Tate McRae remains focused on her own journey, determined to leave a lasting legacy that is as powerful and unforgettable as she is.
