From Closeted Fears to Open Embrace: Neil Patrick Harris' Journey to Publicly Coming Out as Gay

In a candid conversation on the "Great Company" podcast, Neil Patrick Harris, 53, opened up about his emotional journey towards publicly acknowledging his sexuality. The beloved actor recalled the pressure he felt during his early days on How I Met Your Mother, where his close relationship with now-husband David Burtka, 51, was a well-kept secret. "At that time, there were internet gossips lurking around every corner, trying to guess who the next actor might be in the closet," Harris shared.

"I feared being the next target of those rumors and the potential fallout they could bring." Although Harris and Burtka often graced the same red carpet events together, they strategically avoided posing for photos as a couple to keep their relationship status under wraps. "David would be on the other side of the photographers while I walked the carpet," the Emmy winner explained.

"We could justify it, saying our private lives were just that, but in truth, it made David feel secondary." The rumors surrounding Harris' sexuality escalated, leading to a public relations dilemma. "There was a comment that I had supposedly said, 'I wasn't of that persuasion,'" Harris revealed to host Jamie Laing. "This spun into speculation about why I would deny my homosexuality and eventually led me to feel the need to address the situation proactively." Working closely with his agent and publicist, Harris crafted an honest and sincere statement, which he shared in 2006.

However, his fears of potential backlash lingered. "I was a bit apprehensive about the possible stigma that would follow," he admitted. "There were instances where 'God hates f**s' signs were planted on people's lawns, so it wasn't an unfounded concern." Upon sharing his truth, Harris found a surprising reaction from the public. "There was an indifference at best," he quipped.

"I couldn't help but feel a little offended that more people weren't surprised or shocked by my announcement." Harris and Burtka eventually tied the knot in 2014, four years after welcoming twins Harper and Gideon via surrogate. Reflecting on his journey, Harris expressed gratitude for those who paved the way for his open embrace of his identity. "There were many individuals before me who faced much harder times," he said.

"Their courageous struggles laid a foundation that allowed me to come out in a more open and accepting world."
