Heartbroken Community Mourns Florida Father Killed While Breaking Up Schoolyard Brawl

In a shocking turn of events, a beloved father in Apopka, Florida was tragically killed after attempting to intervene in a violent altercation near his daughter's school. The incident occurred on the first day of school, August 11, as Daryl Hill, a devoted father of one, was dropping off his 10-year-old daughter at Wolf Lake Elementary School. After completing the drop-off, Hill noticed a heated argument between a man and a woman in a pickup truck.

According to an affidavit obtained by People, Hill felt compelled to intervene and break up the fight. During the ensuing altercation, three individuals ended up in the bushes near the roadside. Upon arrival of the authorities, witnesses reported that Hill emerged from the bushes with his hands raised, seemingly calling for help before being fatally shot by the alleged assailant, Raul Lionel Vazquez, 26.

The tragic incident was witnessed by Ryan Harper and his family, who were driving their children to school when they heard a loud bang and saw Hill's lifeless body on the roadway. "Not the best way of going back to school on day one... I think everybody’s shaken up by it," Harper told local news outlet WKMG, expressing his shock at the violent turn of events that occurred mere feet away from his own family.

Vazquez was arrested hours later and charged with second-degree murder with a firearm. He will appear in court again on August 17. It is unclear if Vazquez has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following his arrest. Hill's wife, Suzanne, shared her grief with WKMG, expressing her desire to maintain some semblance of normality for their daughter while also remembering the father she adored.

"Behind the laughter and fun was a warm, caring, and sincere person who really loved people, especially his family," she said, painting a poignant portrait of the man taken too soon.
